The Reverend
Sally Brown
is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a board-certified
clinical chaplain. In 1998, she retired from hospital chaplaincy
at the Palo Alto VA Health Care System (California) to help research
and write the biography of Marty Mann. Her chaplaincy specialties
were hospice and PTSD inpatients, women veterans, and alcohol and
drug patients. She was recognized at the VA and by regional and
national awards from the United Church of Christ for her leadership
and work as a chaplain. She continues to be active in her denomination
and community. Three years ago, she returned to the Palo Alto VA
part-time to serve Iraq/Afghanistan veterans and dual diagnosis
patients.
Sally’s
first degrees were a bachelor of arts in English from the University
of Washington (Seattle) and a master of science in recreation from
San Jose State University (California). Prior to her master of divinity
degree from the Pacific School of Religion (Berkeley) and entry
into the ministry, Sally was a professionally certified recreation
therapist, specializing in the older adult population. She developed
and taught at De Anza College (California) the state’s first
community college courses in gerontology and in adapted recreation,
and consulted in convalescent hospitals. She has a lifetime teaching
credential in California community college education. Her lifelong
avocation has been dance.
In 1977 Sally recovered
from alcoholism and continues to work actively with alcoholics and
addicts, especially women, in recovery.
David R. Brown,
one of America’s computer pioneers, attended graduate school
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his
master’s degree and worked on one of the earliest electronic
computers, Whirlwind. After graduate school, he worked at MIT and
an MIT spin-off, the Mitre Corporation. In 1963, when he moved with
his family to California, he joined SRI International, mostly as
a manager of computer research, until his retirement in 1991. In
1968, he was honored as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers in recognition of his contributions to
computer development.
At SRI he was involved
in contract research for both government and industry. He was associated
with many developments, including interactive computer terminals,
the ARPA network (now the Internet), and artificial intelligence.
A project in the 1970s was concerned with the processing of data
from Alcoholism Treatment Centers of the NIAAA.
In 1982 he was appointed
to the Alcoholism Advisory Board of Santa Clara County where he
served until 1990, including three terms as chairperson. While there,
he helped form the Long-Range Planning Committee of the Alcoholism
Advisory Board, a committee designed to anticipate future needs
of the county in alcohol prevention, intervention, and treatment.
In retirement, he is
active in his church and denominational affairs. In connection with
his avocation, genealogy, he works part time as a volunteer librarian
at the local Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-Day Saints in Menlo Park.
He was a member of the
board of directors of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Dependence of Silicon Valley (NCADD).
Sally
and David are the authors of two books: A Biography of Mrs.
Marty Mann: The First Lady of Alcoholics Anonymous (Hazelden.
Center City, MN. 2001) and a well-received one directed to parents
of alcoholics. (For more information and to order the latter, contact
the authors directly.) Sally and David are accomplished speakers
and workshop leaders in the field of addictive disease. They have
been interviewed on the radio more than 50 times and several times
on television.
Sally and David were
married in 1944. Since 1963, they have been residents of Palo Alto,
California. They have four grown children and a granddaughter.
