The Reverend Sally Brown is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a board-certified clinical chaplain. In 1998, she retired from hospital chaplaincy at the Palo Alto VA Health Care System (California) to help research and write the biography of Marty Mann. Her chaplaincy specialties were hospice and PTSD inpatients, women veterans, and alcohol and drug patients. She was recognized at the VA and by regional and national awards from the United Church of Christ for her leadership and work as a chaplain. She continues to be active in her denomination and community. Three years ago, she returned to the Palo Alto VA part-time to serve Iraq/Afghanistan veterans and dual diagnosis patients.

Sally’s first degrees were a bachelor of arts in English from the University of Washington (Seattle) and a master of science in recreation from San Jose State University (California). Prior to her master of divinity degree from the Pacific School of Religion (Berkeley) and entry into the ministry, Sally was a professionally certified recreation therapist, specializing in the older adult population. She developed and taught at De Anza College (California) the state’s first community college courses in gerontology and in adapted recreation, and consulted in convalescent hospitals. She has a lifetime teaching credential in California community college education. Her lifelong avocation has been dance.

In 1977 Sally recovered from alcoholism and continues to work actively with alcoholics and addicts, especially women, in recovery.

David R. Brown, one of America’s computer pioneers, attended graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his master’s degree and worked on one of the earliest electronic computers, Whirlwind. After graduate school, he worked at MIT and an MIT spin-off, the Mitre Corporation. In 1963, when he moved with his family to California, he joined SRI International, mostly as a manager of computer research, until his retirement in 1991. In 1968, he was honored as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in recognition of his contributions to computer development.

At SRI he was involved in contract research for both government and industry. He was associated with many developments, including interactive computer terminals, the ARPA network (now the Internet), and artificial intelligence. A project in the 1970s was concerned with the processing of data from Alcoholism Treatment Centers of the NIAAA.

In 1982 he was appointed to the Alcoholism Advisory Board of Santa Clara County where he served until 1990, including three terms as chairperson. While there, he helped form the Long-Range Planning Committee of the Alcoholism Advisory Board, a committee designed to anticipate future needs of the county in alcohol prevention, intervention, and treatment.

In retirement, he is active in his church and denominational affairs. In connection with his avocation, genealogy, he works part time as a volunteer librarian at the local Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Menlo Park.

He was a member of the board of directors of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of Silicon Valley (NCADD).

Sally and David are the authors of two books: A Biography of Mrs. Marty Mann: The First Lady of Alcoholics Anonymous (Hazelden. Center City, MN. 2001) and a well-received one directed to parents of alcoholics. (For more information and to order the latter, contact the authors directly.) Sally and David are accomplished speakers and workshop leaders in the field of addictive disease. They have been interviewed on the radio more than 50 times and several times on television.

Sally and David were married in 1944. Since 1963, they have been residents of Palo Alto, California. They have four grown children and a granddaughter.
